Albert Shaw (Former Staff) Passes Away

Al Shaw was born in Union City, NJ and raised by his maternal grandmother in Valley Cottage, NY. He graduated from Rockland State Hospital Nursing School and then from Nyack Missionary Training Institute, where he met Bernice Garrison. After he proposed 3 times (!) they married in 1942 and sailed with their daughter, Peggy, to India, where 2 more daughters, Lynette and Vivian, were born.

They served as Christian Missionary Alliance missionaries in Maharashtra until moving to Kodaikanal in 1957 to teach in Kodaikanal School and act as house parents at Longcroft. Al taught 7th grade and High school biology among other things but his first and great love may have been hiking to Tope. In 1974 he and Bernice moved to Quito, Ecuador to teach in the Alliance Academy located there. After their retirement in 1982, they moved to Portland, Oregon to be close to their daughters and their families.

Al's passion for healthy eating, exercise, good manners and correct grammar were matched by his lifelong belief in conservation ("Please turn off the light when you leave a room!") and his love of God's glorious creation. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service in honor of Al would be held at the Portland Chinese Christian & Mission Alliance Church, 7435 SW Foster Road, Portland, OR 97206, USA at 2 PM on 10 August 2013.
