Mrs. Erna Polly Hennig Passes (Former Staff)

Erna M. “Polly” Hennig, 93, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Parkview Memorial Hospital. Born on December 5, 1921 in Brownstown, Ind.; she was a daughter of the late Louis and Selma (Pohlman) Pollert. Polly spent more than 25 years teaching in Lutheran Schools. Most of that time was spent in Fort Wayne’s Zion School, but for eight years she and her husband helped prepare the children of Lutheran missionaries in South India for future education in this country. During retirement, Polly was active in her church, New Life Lutheran; she enjoyed teaching English to Vietnamese people; and her special joy was to share the Gospel whenever there was an opportunity to do so. Until recently, she taught Bible stories to the children in both the New Life English and Burmese services.

Another activity of vital interest to Polly was involvement in what is known as “Bethania Kids”- a ministry in South India whereby about 1000 of the poorest children’s physical and spiritual needs are being met. Polly was endlessly loving and compassionate. Her life's mission was to share the Gospel and to help those who were less fortunate. She is survived by her sons, Gene (Kristin) Hennig of Chanhassen, MN and Mark Hennig of Fort Wayne; her daughter, Anne (Jim) Wunderlich of Libertyville, IL; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Gloria Hennig of Seward, NE. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert Hennig in 1996; her son, Robert Hennig; and her brother, Harold Pollert.

Funeral Service will be Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 10:00am at Zion Lutheran Church, 2313 South Hanna St., Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior. Burial at Concordia Cemetery Gardens, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to New Life Lutheran Church or Bethania Kids Ministries. For online condolences, please visit www.hockemeyermillerfh.com
