Stephen Dale Steele Passes

Stephen "Steve" Dale Steele ’63 passed away peacefully after a valiant battle with cancer, on March 19, 2014 in his home in La Quinta, CA. surrounded by his loving wife, family, and dearest friend. Steve was 69 years old and always lived life to the fullest.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Steve traveled the world at an early age with his parents and brother, living in Kabul, Afghanistan, and later attending and graduating from high school at the Kodiakanal International School in India (1963). After moving back to the United States, he attended Officer Candidate School and became an Army Officer, later serving in Okinawa, where his love for computers evolved. He then went on to receive his B.S. in Computer Science from American University in Washington D.C. (1973). A few years later Steve moved to Seattle and founded a medical software company, Cortex Medical Management Systems, Inc., with Stan Gordon, his closest friend and business partner for over three decades, who was with him until the end. One of Steve's wishes is that Cortex carry on the very important mission of providing technological services to the medical community.

For those of us who knew him, Steve will best be remembered for his values, loyalty, integrity, love of sailing, and love for his country. He passed that on to all of us close to him and has left an indelible mark within his family that will be carried on for years to come.

Steve's parents, Odes "Dale" and Glenna Steele, of Salt Lake City, Utah, preceded him in death. His loving wife and traveling partner, Shirley, and his devoted younger brother Richard, (Linn) survive him. He also leaves behind three loving children, Kim Van Wyk (Mark), Tiffany, and Alex, along with his step-daughter, Shawn (Robert), four grandsons, Logan, Blake, Collin, and Seth, and three granddaughters, Everly, Erika, and Lexi. One of Steve's greatest legacies was as a positive role model to his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
